Not familiar with that particular camera, but many allow exposure lock with shutter button half-way depressed. Frame your subject tight, lock exposure and focus, then go wider and compose your shot. You'll get better than the auto-averaging results. Also helpful for foreground elements if you use auto-focus

Thanks for the tip. I didn't think exposure lock was available on the Canon 590 IS in video mode but it turns out it is.

Better to lock your exposure at street level and then tilt up for the low angle sky shot. Sky is white anyway, and you'd pick up a lot more gory details
