I got this VHS tape from a used records store that I used to live by, I've had it since probably at least 1995. Sorry about the quality, like I said it was on videotape, I've finally gotten around to transferring it. The tape had these, and all the raw footage from the three songs the band rehearsed earlier that week. I've seen multiple people already have those 3 songs up here on YT (Daughter, Rearview Mirror and Not For You) but I've never seen the shooting of these commercial promos before, so I thought why not. Maybe there's even some hardcore PJ fans who've still never seen these. It's funny to watch how obviously nervous that Adam Sandler is in these, he was a huge PJ fan (probably still is).

FUN FACT: at the time this aired (April 1994), only one other musical artist in the history of Saturday Night Live was allowed to play 3 songs in one episode (the usual is 2), Aretha Franklin back in the late 70's. Pearl Jam became the second. But I haven't regularly watched SNL in a long time, another band might've done it again by now for all I know.
Also, this was recorded only days after the news hit that Nirvana's Kurt Cobain committed suicide. The "K" drawn in a circle on Eddie's tshirt is a reference to Cobain. He reveals it briefly during one of the song performances that Saturday night, and more obviously shows it (& looks sadly up to the rafters) during the cast goodbyes at the end of the show.

  • @Alli8833 - what you have to remember is when in PJ's evolution this was, by 1994 the band's global popularity had gotten to just an insane level, and Ed had a real difficult time dealing with such a level of fame. The last thing he ever felt was natural in the kind of environment that's shown here, where he's in the mode of having to be part of promotion of any kind. I mean it's part of why they did so few videos. So I think this is where the shyness came from.

  • @esaheijari - If you're referring to when Sandler is dressed as Opera Man on Weekend Update and he starts singing Even Flow in sort of a parody fashion, no I don't believe I do. But there is a little bit of that footage including in Cameron Crowe's PJ20 documentary.

  • @Ivillalobos - Eddie simply asks Emilio "How's it been this week?", to which Emilio replies (I believe) everything's been good, just fine.

  • @bbcasting - I've said this to several people already. You know how in the movie "Funny People", Sandler's actor character had all of these really bad comedies that he was ashamed of having made earlier in his career (even though they made him rich)? If I didn't know any better, I would've absolutely thought the trailer for Jack & Jill was another one of those fake bad movies within the FP movie. I was genuinely just totally stunned at how awful that movie looks.

  • @grrrly - Do you happen to know exactly how your husband knows that? Only because, well I've known about the Aretha/PJ 3 song connection for years now, and when I was UL'ing this I double checked SNL's wiki to be sure, it mentions the trivia in the entries for both shows, but I just looked at the one for that 76 show, and there's nothing about The Band doing 4 songs.

  • this is so awesome!

  • @BadPennyFilms yeah i know all the issues he had then, but i still don't think that was being shy. i mean, estevez was being a prize winning douche bag, sandler was being weird out of nervousness maybe, and the crew were being spazzes. lol. i think eddie was just unimpressed, and rightly so! hilarious video though!!

  • hahahaha, love Eddie's reaction when sandler suddenly busts out about his sever case of inherited OCD. eddie has nothing to say about that information, lol! who knew SNL could be so horribly awkward. then he leaves and the other two proclaim him shy. i thought itbwas more like eddie just couldn't relate to those dudes.

  • 5:04 Adam feels Emilio's ass wax lol.

  • wow. That looked awkward.

  • Eddie shoots the shit with Sandler about how he keeps seeing the number 23, the day he was born. He points out something in the studio with 23 and says he had something with the expiration date 23..."I always wonder about it" Meanwhile Gordon Bombays too preoccupied with his superstardom that would last him about 3 more weeks to have a real convo with a real person.

  • Emilio Estevez kinda seems like a tool here lmao
