Abba - Summer Night City (DC)

With their touring days over by 1981, Abba decided to use tv specials to promote their new songs. In April 1981 they performed a mini concert for tv at Europa Film Studios Stockholm, called "Dick Cavett meets Abba". Bjorn recalls "We wanted to do something really special, a tv show with both an interview and a live performance. Someone suggested Dick Cavett, one of the world's most famous and skilful interviewers. He accepted and came to Sweden. We didn't talk much beforehand. I think we were much more nervous than he was, but his composure made us relax and open up. We never regretted that we chose Dick Cavett."
Rehearsals for the songs took place on April 24-26. The interview with Dick Cavett was recorded before an audience on April 27 as the first part of the tv show. The presenter managed to involve the four Swedes in his many jokes. The group gave an unaccompanied version of Don't Fence Me In in both Swedish and English. Frida gave Dick Cavett a lesson in Swedish pronounciation with the number 777 (sjuhundrasjuttiosju).
The mini concert was recorded on April 28-29. The group performed live and were joined by their usual backing musicians. The songs performed were Gimme Gimme Gimme, Super Trouper, Two For The Price Of One, Slipping Through My Fingers, Me And I, Knowing Me Knowing You, Summer Night City, Thank You For The Music and On And On And On. 20 hours of material was recorded. This was edited down to one hour for the tv special, with song mixing by Micke Tretow and Bjorn and Benny. The tv special was broadcast throughout Scandinavia in September and most of Europe afterwards.
Summer Night City was recorded from May to July 1978 at the new Polar Music Studios in Stockholm. This song is a good example of a track which was difficult to complete. Assisted by Michael B. Tretow, Benny and Bjorn spent a week trying every mix possible. In an effort to make the song sound more forceful, they decided to cut the 45 second introduction. Bjorn later said "The song deserved a better treatment." The song was released as a single on September 6. It reached No.1 in Sweden on October 6, No.5 in Britain and the top 5 in most European countries. The song was inspired by the Bee Gees. New Musical Express wrote "Abba go disco - the song's by no means as memorable as earlier stuff." Bjorn retorted "Everyone's doing it - it's the pulse of the 70's!"
