Did you ever think that they are stars because it sounds better than "circle bellied sneetches" or "triangle bellied sneetches"? Dr. Seuss loved wordplay and the way certain things sounded.

I might agree, but based on it in his genius way, that originally stars branded the elite, not the sub-par, demonstrating the stupidity of the German's reasoning in forcing a people to where a symbol that unified them. But moreover, I think the story simply reveals the vanity of appearance.

I do agree it is a commentary on conformity, but it can also be interpreted as a commentary on racism and how people judge based on different physical traits (remember in the beginning how the star-bellied sneetches wouldn't even want to live among the non-star-bellied sneetches?)
