Glad you finally did figure out the simple coil on the Hygain antenna. I had one of those when I was in my teens, great product! I now use two home made phased verticals for 40 meters... Look me up on QRZ:)

Sorry John, I really don't studder LOL:) Thanks again for a great Video!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Most Hams don't put on enough ground radials or No radials and then they brag about a great SWR curve. But when you add ground radials and you see the SWR go up this is normal. The base impedance should be around 35 ohms. Then a shunt coil to ground can be added to bring the base impedance back up to 50 ohms. But the curve for SWR will be narrower if the antenna is installed correctly with the correct amount amount radial system and a shunt... :)

Also a coil to ground will raise the base impedance back up to 50 ohms after the radials are installed. Remember four radials are not enough!!! The antenna suffers in efficiency if not enough radials are used. I believe that this could be a good antenna if you support it with a Dacron guy system part way up to take the sway out of it, and by putting in a great radial system. As the radial system is the other half of the antenna.
A 43 foot vertical would give you some gain on 40 meters.

Tnx for watching and following along with the videos. You're correct the 43 would do better, but I use it mostly on 20 meters and use a tuner for 40 meters. It does pretty well.

why would you not have put the conector into the hole on the tube were rhe wire comes out, that were it should be. not on the aluminum L braket

@arnoldcustom
The hole is not where the connector goes. The S9v works best with a unun, therefore the antenna wire must be attached to a unun or balun. Usually one uses some type of support for that, hence the L bracket.

BTW that antenna with the propper shunt coil will load that antenna great on 20 meters as a 1/2 wave!! I often use my 40 meter verticals on 20 meters, with coil and cap at the bottom of the antennas. I do have plans to make a box with a coil and 2 caps to use at the bottom of both these antennas to automatically switch bands. This is in “More Vertical Antenna Classics”, an ARRL book page 7.
