Distinction: numeral vs. number. Substituting a numeral for a variable, not a number for a variable. (Unless you are using numbers as names for themselves.) This is different from an assignment to the variable (e.g. assigning three as the denotation of the variable 'x', and illustrating this by replacing 'x' with the numeral '3'
