Flying Dutchman on Longs Peak

I shot this video of an ascent of Flying Dutchman (a couloir on Longs Peak) on May 19, 2007. Our original plan was to ascend Flying Dutchman, climb over the top of The Beaver, rapp into The Notch, and climb to the summit of Longs Peak via Stepladder. However, I felt like crap from the get-go and was thus really slow. By the time we topped out of Flying Dutchman it was late and the weather was looking a little dodgy. We decided to bail down The Loft. Still a good day out in the hills.

Why do you only place pro at that one spot? whaen you are hiking up do you place anything?

You're still ahead of me. Weather blew us off a Chasm ascent in February and the North Face is March. We never did peak. That mountain in winter can make one look tired and foolish, at least it did to us. Climb on!

Well done. Try to be more selective with your axe and crampon placements. It wastes less energy. Try for one, at most two hits with either. Good climb.

I was the one behind the camera so there is no video of me on the climb. Rest assured that my climbing was a flawless demonstration of grace, beauty, and pure efficiency. Will Gadd would have been envious had he been able to witness my sublime performance ;-)
