The famous couple discuss their roles as Giselle and Albrecht. The footage of them dancing is from 1951. The dancers that Sir Anton Dolin is teaching the roles to are Helgi Tommason and Patricia McBride.

  • Markova was not the first english ballerina to dance Giselle.....she was the first english ballerina to dance Petipa's edition.

  • I am absolutely intrigued. You have enlightened me before. I find the vast knowledge you have ...incredible! Please tell me - who was the first? Dame Alicia speaks so matter of factly about her Giselle I can't help but chuckle!

  • @mrlopez2681 I believe all pre-Markova/Sergueiev London stagings were danced by non-British ballerinas..(Pavlova/Clustine, 1913 and Spessivtseva/Dolin 1932)

  • @mrlopez2681 This happened on March 12 1842, but it was performed then and there by Carlotta Grisi .

  • i think the first English Giselle (if you say there was one before Markova) must have been Emma Livery (mid 19th century) who died from injuries sustained in an on stage fire.

  • One thing, I'm so glad that the fashion for dancing Albrecht in

a pair of hush puppies never caught on. The whole of the film

is a condensed version of the ballet not lasting longer than about 30 minutes, I recall.

  • This is just priceless! thanks a lot for posting these Markova´s and Dolin´s videos goldenidol... I have to thank techology and the internet every time I watch a video like this =)

  • from 'a portrait of giselle'

  • oh dear - I'll have to look it up!! "giselle" was being performed at her Majesty's Theatre during the romantic heyday loooooong before it even went to Russia! BTW....you honor me with your kind words goldenidol - or shall I call you 'Bazhok'? . I'm bowing low. :)
