Chant group Psallentes consists of six professional singers, presenting a vivid performance of late medieval chant. Here you can listen to (part of) the prosa 'Ave Maria' while watching the same in the original manuscript (E-Bc 911, which is a cantorale from Girona). This is from the cd 'Llibre Vermell de Montserrat' RIC 260. Buy the cd at www.ricercar.be - other discs available as well. Check it out!

  • This is easily the most sublime rendition of the "Ave" that I have heard! Does anyone know where I can find the full lyrics to this?

  • @akrasiel1101

I'm posting the text in parts:

Ave maria gratia plena. Dominus tecum, virgo serena. Benedicta tu in mulieribus.

  • @akrasiel1101 Third part is: Ergo maris stella, verbi Dei cella et solis aurora, Paradisi porta. Amen.

  • Beautiful, but technically speaking, true Gregorian chant is not polyphonic.

  • gregorian chants are absolutely beautiful

  • @jlmadill Agreed, beyond beatiful, but technically this is not Gregorian chant.

  • God Pig...

  • Thank you for posting this beautiful Chant. It makes my heart sing too....

  • This sounds very much like Greek Orthodox Byzantine chants - the way the phrases work and also a slight durge in the background at certain points throughout the hymn. Never heard anything like it before - wonderful!

  • what are the lyrics of Ave maria in Latin? who are these people of this group or band?

  • @jlmadill we can never really know what monks did, and this is not polyphony

  • @jlmadill

There was a lot of natural, spontaneous "polyphony" going on, even in Carolingian days. 5ths and 4ths and 8ves "sounded" perfect (hence, close to what we hear today as unisons).

The idea of "pure" monophony (the way we think of it today) for chant is a 19th century conceit, based on misreading/mistranslating people like Guido, et al.

  • @jlmadill True :)
