Providence College defeats Georgetown, 1987 Elite Eight, advances to Final Four

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- It was announced today that Providence College will hold a gala event to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the 1987 men's basketball team's trip to the Final Four. The event will be held on May 12, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. at the Rhode Island Convention Center. Sponsorship packages, tables of 10 or individual tickets for the event can all be purchased by calling Steve Napolillo at 401-865-2677. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Friar Athletic Fund.

"We are excited to honor this great team," Friar Athletic Director Bob Driscoll said. "That was one of the most memorable seasons in the history of Friar athletics and we plan to put together a great tribute that will honor all the success."

The 1987 season was a magic ride as Head Coach Rick Pitino's squad posted a 25-9 mark and advanced to the Final Four. Billy Donovan, Delray Brooks, Ernie Lewis and Dave Kipfer were a few of the stars on a team that used clutch three-point shooting and plenty of tenacity to advance to a Final Four berth in New Orleans. Pitino, Donovan and many other members of the team and staff have committed to attend the event on May 12. ESPN college basketball experts Sean McDonough and Bill Raftery will serve as emcees for the event.
