If I recall correctly, first the GWR used to run these in a curious coach-loco-coach set to make it easier on the trains for turning. more coaches would be added to each end as needed. Also, when first built, the "autocoach" was powered by a small vertical steam boiler in the cab, but that was soon rebuilt into the form you see today.
