Originally developed for the Swedish Department of Defense, Swedish FireSteel is a flash of genius. Its 3,000°C spark makes fire building easy in any weather, at any altitude. Used by a number of armies around the world, Swedish FireSteel's dependability has already made it a favorite of survival experts, hunters, fishermen and campers. It has also found its way into cabins and backyards as a fool-proof way to light stoves and gas-barbecues. Let's put it to the test.

  • piece of steel and a chunk of lead?

    no

    learn what it is actully

  • Just a hint, do not rub it back and forth like you did while lighting the bark, but the striker at a 45 degree angle against the flint, and press hard, and scrape while maintaining pressure and it will work much better, and your firesteel will last longer.

  • @MrVoiceofreason123 this guy should've learned how to use it first

  • If you want something that floats, is windproof and lightweight, get Instafire. They now have matches that are windproof, light while wet and stay lit even when dipped in a river! Check out their website. Instafire com

  • Ok, if you're gonna make a real fire on things that don't catch fire as easily as gas, I always make a bundle of dry grass and cover the steel scraper with it. Not the magnesium rod, because the spark follows the scraper. My point is that you wanna catch as much of the spark as possible to get a fire as quickly as possible. And you dont have to use too much force if you pull over the whole rod, which makes the rod last longer. Don't forget to have tons of dry grass and small sticks prepared.

  • that was some disgusting abuse of the steel on the bark lol.

  • I recently purchased the Barbaque model Swedish Firesteel from Campmor.

I finally got to try mine out while camping in Ohio's Wayne National Forest. The thing worked. :)

I just had a hard time keeping the fire going. All the available wood was wet due to all the snow Ohio received.

What do you recommend for a good tinder in a pine woods?
