I could always see the importance of sketches throughout history when I was young... they displayed the truth according to the hand that made them... and we can view these with admiration down the centuries. Sketching for my own use was useful, never an important or essential thing to do, yet... I've always needed to do it... throughout my life it was never necessarily necessary... it seems now essential... and that's the truth of it.
Some kids came up to me today they stood behind me and I was busy I didn't acknowledge them immediately, they talked freely to each other... I was invisible to them as I worked away with my ears visibly busy... so as far as they were concerned I wasn't even in their universe. I could however hear every word, my playlist had ended and nothing was playing on the iPod. One lad said how good the picture was and the other replied that it would be great if the pond actually looked like the sketch.
Perception and truth are two odd partners occasionally. There I was trying to capture some of the essential in the landscape and these two kids shortly afterwards, ceremonially kicked someone's football into the middle of the pond.
Like a stage drama describing quantum theory there appeared to be several truths occupying the same part of the universe while at the same time being separate in time and space. I could see their truth (which was not necessarily necessary) they needed to do it for some reason but they only saw mine as a possible truth, one that could only be true in my universe.
Most days I need to do my work in this universe in order to be me. I strive to be true in my work and I try to have the freedom of the luxury to sketch as if, for instance, I'm kicking the football into the pond... my work is to me a necessary truth but it is not necessarily true in all possible universes outside of this one.
The other me, who was there at the pond at their age would have behaved very differently... that me, then, was with me today and we both shied away from engaging with the kickers for entirely different reasons, concerning the whereabouts of the ball... and that is the contingent truth, for now the necessary truth will have to do.
