Dr Joseph Gumbula, Yolngu elder, talks with Julia Mant about working with photographs of north-east Arnhem Land dating from 1927 to the 1940s held in the University of Sydney Archives. As the first Indigenous Research Fellow at the University, Dr Gumbula has been providing descriptions and setting access conditions to the photographs taken by anthropologist William Lloyd Warner and missionary Reverend T.T. Webb. The Yolngu elder has been travelling between Sydney and Arnhem Land over the past three years consulting with his community and deepening the understanding between the two worlds. The project was assisted by university reference archivist Julia Mant and fellow academic Dr Aaron Corn. The project was funded by the Australian Research Council.
