THE POTTERS BAR ZEPPELIN WAS SHOT DOWN ON 1st OCTOBER 1916, BY WULSTAN TEMPEST OF THE ROYAL AIR FORCE'S 39 SQUADRON. THE PILOT OF THE ZEPPELIN, COMMANDER HEINRICH MATHY AND HIS CREW WERE BURIED IN MUTTON LANE CEMETRY, POTTERS BAR. BUT DURING THE 1930s THEIR BODIES WERE DUG UP AND RETURNED TO GERMANY. WULSTAN TEMPEST NOW HAS 2 ROADS NAMED AFTER HIM, TEMPEST AVENUE AND WULSTAN PARK, WHERE THE ZEPPELIN CRASHED. THE WOODEN ARCH SEEN IN THE FUNERAL SCENE, STILL STANDS TODAY.

My father, who lived in Walthamstow, could remember seeing the Zeppelin in flames that night. He never forgot it. It was an imagine that remained on the retina of his memory all his life.

OMG I lived seconds from tempest avenue (crash site) and went to school on the oakmere estate and we were not told any details, it was only mentioned once?

I don't suppose there's a plaque on the site? The field's most probably a housing estate by now

What a great vidio, only the British would have laid on that military funeral.

Lt.Tempest describes his exploit in detail in his memoir. He visited the scene of the crash on the morning after:-
"The blackened skeleton of the vanquished monster lay across two fields and the enterprising farmer to whom they belonged was making a charge at the gate.
I paid my shilling and went in."
