I've made another video since I've equipped it with keycaps http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VN1VNwNi0Y8

Here I am trying out my home made MIDI Janko keyboard. It's connected to a softsynth on my computer. You can read more about the project on the link below. The design uses the Cherry MX keyswitch series and is implemented with ATmega8515 avrs.

  • Superb! I hope you finish soon your project and post more vids here on youtube. Leave the velocity issue for phase 2.0. I hope I had the skills to build something like that too. Best of luck and keep posting!

  • Thanks. The only real obstacle now are the keycaps but I hope to get some help from a friend. Besides that all it needs now is a cabinet. Another groovy feature of this thing is that it can easily be equipped with 7 more units for example another keyboard manual or foot pedals or control buttons and so on.

  • God I hate digital synths.

  • Nice work. The only thing objectionable though are these tactile switches. They are noisy and switch abruptly... i.e. unsuitable for many most slow melody play.

  • Damn, I wish I had DIY skills... I've been searching for janko keyboards or uniform keyboards for years, but nobody manufactures them.. except japanese chromatone but those seem to be prototypes and cost a fortune

  • Are you running B4?

  • wicki hayden FTW!!!!!

janko is kewl too though, i was going to buy a thummer but they're dead meat now :(

I'm thinking about buying a custom opal midi, with a hayden layout.

I went to your site, you mention that the cherry mx keys do not support velocity...you seem to indicate that you made it work somehow. How?

  • Good work! But I do think it's better to use traditional markings. I built just a practice one with reversed colour like a harpsichord -7 black, 5-white and closer keys. It's so stupid nobody sells MIDI keyboards like this. (I hate the chromatone -it's like a computer keyboard.)

  • Ha, that makes me want to find a Janko keyboard and figure out how to use it. It looks like it would make chords a lot easier, once I got used to the different setup.

That's great that you're making one yourself, I hope it's going well.
