  • Hi My Fellow TH'er Mike

Thanks for sharing your finds with the rest of us TH'ers as I for one love to see what others are digging up.

The .58 Cal bullets with the 'Star Base' are not Washington Arsenal bullets as there was no such arsenal. There are several references to 'Star Base' bullets in several Civil War bullet reference books but they do list three different sizes of 'Stars' Small Medium and Large. I could not see yours well enough to determine the size, but in any case a wonderful find.

  • @THing4CSA they are washington arsenal "star base " bullets.. im sure.

  • I think it was worth the trip huh.

  • @justanotherpulltab oh yea,

  • Sorry for the confusion on my part I had to cut back the size of my reply and what I meant was that there is no basis or proof that the 'Star Based' .58 Cal mini ball or three ringer was made at the Washington Arsenal. Yes there were bullets made at the arsenal and yes they did make .58 cal Mini balls but no where will you find the 'Star base' spelled out as being made at the Washington Arsenal. Look at your Star base bullets and see if there is a mold line on it. Easy to spot if a drop.

  • Hi Thanks for allowing me to attempt to be as exact as possible.

What I am trying to say is yes there was a Washington Arsenal and yes there are .58 Cal mini balls. What I am trying to say is that the 'Star Based' .58 Cal three ringer 'Mini Ball' is referred to as a Washington Arsenal bullet but there is no proof to back up this claim. My question to everyone is show me proof that the 'Star Based' .58 was made at the Washington Arsenal and I will share the proof with all the ref book printers.

  • @THing4CSA if you are trying to be exact, my next question would be why did your first reply say that there was no such arsenal? Now it seems you are in agreement that the washington arsenal exists?? Forgive me Im just confused. Every projectile expert in the country will call these bullets Washington arsenal bullets.. you are the first I've ever heard bring this into question

  • @umrgolf2000 Yes these are referred to as Washington Arsenal bullets but the problem is there is no proof that 'Star Based' bullets were made at the Arsenal at Washington, DC. All the references that I have read state this fact & state that the 'Star Based mini balls, referred to as Washington Arsenal bullets have no basis in fact.' Every reference book either ignore the origin or explain that they are 'Referred to as Washington Arsenal bullets'. Just trying to be exact on them.

  • @THing4CSA nuggetnoggin is correct, they are 100% Washington arsenal star base bullets... given that name because they were made at the Washington arsenal
