There were actually a lot of "prophets" around the time of Muhammed so it makes perfect sense the most appealing and agressive one would grow. I'm not gonna deny the authors of the Quran put a lot of effort in it. Lot of verses are based on psychological warfare... retorical bullcrap and threatening with hell and about the unbelievers. It is supposed to make you fear god and then accept it so it'll give you a comfortable peaceful fealing.
