Hi! Im veterinarian and Purina Cat Chow Mentor Doctor Karen Sueda. When it comes to kittens, one thing is certain: they are so incredibly cute that everyone wants to play with them and pick them up. But that can be pretty overwhelming to a new kitten who isnt familiar with you, your home, or your other pets. Helping your kitten get emotionally grounded and feeling safe and cared for is a critical first step in her long term well-being. Here are some things to keep in mind. Allow your kitten to acclimate to her new environment slowly. Choose a quiet, small room and make that her safe space for the first few days. This will give her the chance to gradually get used to the smells and sounds of your home without feeling overwhelmed. When it comes to new introductions, try sitting quietly on the floor, so youre more on your kittens level, and talk gently to her. Gradually work your way up to entertaining her with toys and challenging her to explore a little by leaving a few kibbles of Purina Kitten Chow here and there. Once your kitten is feeling comfortable and confident, crack the door open a bit and allow her to begin exploring. If there are children or other pets in the home, supervise these interactions and keep them brief until you are sure your kitten does not feel threatened or scared. Should you allow your kitten to explore outside the home? I recommend against it. Its a proven fact that cats who remain indoor live nearly twice as long as outdoor cats. Thanks for watching! And remember that giving your kitten lots of love and affection will help build the foundation for your happy, healthy life together.

My cat was an outside cat, and he lived until he was 18.5... I don't believe that inside cats live twice as long as outside cats, thanks very much!

@wakafreako But still, some people who live in small spaces such as lofts, apartments, and group homes don't have access to open spaces such as backyards. If you let a kitten out it maybe overwhelmed by such a vast space and sounds such as cars, other people, buses and much more causing them to panic. An old forgetful cat may take one wrong turn and forget how to get home. Yes anything outside can be accessed indoors and even without outside play a cat can be happy AND safe.
