  • wow awesome.... fully respect for UP for maintaining such locos

  • I love hearing that locomotive!

  • @flare40x The US has track that's good for 150, up in the Northeast Corridor. They're also upgrading other areas, like in the Pacific Northwest. I'd wager that an FEF like 844 would be able to make it over 125. The frame is still rated for 120, and the drivers could be re-balanced. Also, the US did have some of the speed records, so we would in fact be able to "bring it back". The Empire State Express #999 took the award in 1893, Milwaukee Road #6402 in 1934, and Milwaukee Road #2 in 1935.

  • most amazing video of a steam loco i've ever seen...it must have been very intimidating to see that behemoth charge at that speed, and nice job on filming it.

  • Great video. Man he's movin'...lol

  • @TommyboyGTP, you can't bring the steam speed record "back" to the US. You never had it. Mallard took it from the Germans. While UP has fast track, I doubt it's legal for more than 80mph today. The Britis have all-new track good for 180mph, the French for 240mph east of Paris. Even with a fast engine, without that kind of fast track Americans can't do it.

  • My guess would be the rails are not meant for that kind of speed.

  • I read on Wikipedia that this beautiful beast is safely rated to run 120 m.p.h, so why doesn't Union Pacific go for the record and steal it away from the Brits and their Mallard which suffered severe damage to hit 125? Bring the steam record back to the United States!

  • Spectacular close up zoom & great panoramic pacing, all rolled into one!

  • Hey - were you by any chance driving a white Ford Focus for this trip? If you were, I have some pictures that you may want to see.... Great video!!!!
