The Mitsubishi Outlander GT Prototype, unveiled here at the 2009 New York Auto Show, suggests this mild-mannered crossover may have some sporting potential lurking beneath its staid skin.
Mitsubishi starts by massaging the SOHC 3.0-liter V6, lifting output by 10 horsepower to 230 hp while boosting low-end torque. By reprogramming the engine/transmission control unit, the company also was able to enhance fuel economy.
To improve handling, the engineers stiffened the suspension and fitted larger Brembo brakes, along with 19-inch OZ Racing wheels and performance tires.
The Outlander GT also borrows heavily from the Lancer Evolution, notably the car's mighty Super All-Wheel-Control (S-AWC) system, employing a front limited-slip differential and an electronically controlled 4WD coupling to prevent wheel slip and provide greater all-weather traction.
The Lancer provided styling inspiration as well, particularly in front, where the Outlander GT features a new grille, front bumper, fenders and hood, as well as reshaped headlamps, new side sills and rear bumper and a polished aluminum roof panel.
Mitsubishi used grained, double-stitched synthetic leather and chrome accents in the cockpit, adapting aluminum racing-style pedals and a sport steering wheel from the Lancer Evo. Audiophiles will appreciate the upgraded Rockford Fosgate system, as well as the new FUSE Handsfree Media Gateway, which combines voice-recognition capabilities with Bluetooth-enabled hands-free calling and audio playback.
Great move Mitzubishi. It looks 10x better.
