"Ibong Sawi" is a Kundiman composition of Juan Buencamino. The lyrics were written by the poet Jose Corazon de Jesus. Performed by Conching Rosal under the music supervision of Leopoldo Silos. Audio from a vintage vinyl phonograph recording.

CONCHING ROSAL
"First Lady of the Philippine Operatic Stage"
(1926-1985)

A native of San Jose, Batangas, Conchita H. Rosal was born on 1926. She started singing at the age of 6 in their local church in San Jose as a soloist. While studying voice at the UST Conservatory of Music, one of her classmates was Sylvia La Torre. She furthered her studies in voice under the tutelage of Dean Verchines in the United States, a well-known coach to leading artists of the Metropolitan Opera and the New York Opera.

Dubbed as the First Lady of the Philippine Operatic Stage, her career in entertainment started to blossom when she won the Elizalde Family Hour Talent Search in 1952. Her performance as Carmen in Trudel Zippers Tagalog production of Bizets opera brought her fame as an opera singer.

One of the Philippines great sopranos, Rosals musical career spanning three decades were highlighted with unforgettable roles in Philppine productions of Madame Butterfly, 1967, Aida, and the lead role in the zarzwela "Ang Kiri". She died in 1985 of cancer.

The Buencamino Family

The Buencamino family are from Miguel de Mayumo, Bulacan. The Buencamino clan is a family of musicians (Franciso Buencamino, Sr., arranger, "Bahay Kubo"; Juan Buencamino, composer, "Ako'y Isang Ibong Sawi", "Pag-Ibig Ko'y Ikaw", "Haling na Damdamin"; Nonong Buencamino, composer, "1991 SEA Games Theme", "José Rizal: Agnus Dei", "Natutulog Ba ang Diyos"; Willy Buencamino Cruz, composer, "Araw-Araw Gabi-Gabi", "Mahawi Man ang Ulap", "Init sa Magdamag"; Cecile Buencamino Licad, pianist).

The Buencamino Patriarch, Fortunato Buencamino, was a church organist and band master, and his mother, Luisa Beltran, was a singer.

Francisco was a pupil of the composer Marcelo Adonay. He later composed music for zarzuelas ("Marcela", "Si Tio Selo", "Yayang" and "Pangakong Hindi Natupad") and motion pictures ("Ang Ibong Adarna"). He also had several kundiman compositions ("Ang Una Kong Pag-Ibig"/Mi Primer Amor, "Panaguimpan", "A Woman and A Rose"). His masterpiece was the "Mayon Concerto", which took him five years to complete.
