ST LOUIS BLUES
(W.C. Handy 1914, arranged by Fats Waller, 1926)

I play my own transcription of the famous Fats Waller's version. In a few weeks I'll post another video of St Louis Blues, played on another great pipe organ.

A neat and precise sheet music of this transcription is still available for sale:

  • Awesome playing - you use your entire body, all part of the jazz. This rates 6 stars on a scale of 5! Merci.

  • thank you very much, george!!

  • Benjamin;

This is great music you have recreated. Great to listen again today.

Sometime, take a listen to Waller playing "Loveless Love" recorded at Camden Newark. As the music fades in, you can hear that the organ is malfunctioning with a cipher on, I think, tenor C. The cipher is in the entire piece but he keeps it under control with music in the same key around it. At the end he switches from they key of F to a D7th. Great use of a bad situtation.

  • that's an incredible anecdote :-)

this piece is another great example of Fats organ playing. I like it very much.

I can also play "Loveless" note for note, but never had the time to record it on video, only on mp3. If you want, I can send it to you by mail ;-)

  • Your performance has the rustic impression of the rhythm section played by sousaphone and guitar. The rag-inspired melodies of the right hand is flowing like an early recording of the cornet of King Oliver.

Your musical performance and expression is played in perfect harmony.

    Very, very good, thank you!

  • Dear Joachim,

thank you so much for your very kind comment!

    all the best from Paris,

    benjamin

  • Hi Benjamin,

I apologize for not thanking you for your subscription to my channel. Thanks so much!

I absolutely love the way you play. Very, very, very good. This is great music - though a sadly neglected one.

I heard DH play the Mighty Wurlitzer Cinema Organ the city of Berlin has inside it's Musical Instruments Museum, that was in October 1993 (Jitterbug Waltz, 'Round Midnight, Summertime as Bach fugue).

I'd love to get a few very specific organ lessons from you one day.

    All the Best,

    Markus

  • How much is your organ transcription? I love your playing and would like to be able to have a copy of the waller arrangement.

  • Yeah. Fats at the organ. You know two engineers who were musicians and Fats Waller fanatics got a hold of some of Fats' piano rolls and rigged a Mighty Wurlitzer Theater organ to play the piano rolls, which were authentic. The pedal point was hitched to the bottom left hand stride notes. They recorded it as "Fats at the Organ". Its almost my favorite CD. Order it. thanks for uploading this. this guy's got the Stuff. "The only thing you can do with the Blues is Play 'em."

  • Close to 6000 views soon. At least one hundred times it was me. You are so incredibly good, Benjamin.
