HawthorneStreet.com, a neighborhood blog for Prospect Lefferts Gardens, takes a look at one of the most dangerous intersections in Brooklyn: the SE entrance to Prospect Park. Hawthorne Street is working with local residents to press the NYC Department of Transportation to re-envision Ocean & Parkside as a "complete street," one designed not merely to move cars through but one safe for pedestrians, cyclists, and all other users.

  • Terrific piece. I am Bklyn born and raised and everyone (those of us who drive that is, and who do not live in that area) knows this is an area to be avoided, as either motorist or pedestrian.

Some seriously oblivious and aggressive drivers frequent that intersection and the surrounding ones as well.

  • I live right on parkside bet ocean & Flatbush right near where ur filming & i don't see the point of this vid cause if ur alert then there's no reason for u to have a problem crossing

  • I know how you feel.

Almost everywhere intersection is NYC, Westchester County, Long Island is unsafe.

  • I was born and raised in that area. I am still alive and kicking. This is New York!!! Where the hell r u from?

  • I'm talking about if you crossed the street WITH PURPOSE instead of wasting time panning left, right, up, and down, you will actually be able to cross within the duration of your "WALK" signal. It has nothing to do if the individual is pregnant, elderly, or have children in tow. The intersection has existed in it's present state well before you and hubby arrived from whatever midwest flyover state you hail from.

  • No idea what you're talking about. I was walking directly across the street. If I was slow, it was because I was nearly 8 months pregnant. So your point is.... what exactly? As long as you hurry across the street -- as long as you aren't pregnant, eldery, or accompanied by children -- the intersection is fine? Perhaps you need to consider that not every New Yorker is a healthy, single 20 or 30 year old. (carrie, using her husband's login bc I can no longer remember mine)

  • If you blase across the intersection like you have nowhere to go then yes drivers will grow impatient and fail to yield. Is this right? No. However, time and again while walking i've noticed that pedestrians will demand that vehicles yield at the risk of their own personal safety. It's quite sinple if you "have the light" then cross quickly and with purpose. Seems like in your video you intentionally crossed the intersection slowly in order to incite motorists to do things to validate your point

  • Fuck you all, I'm tired of this shit, I'm not prejudice I have a lot of white friends who agrees with me, why when white people move into the hood that's when things changed for the better, I've lived on Ocean and Parkside all my life born and raised there and I am over 30. We complain about many things in our hood but nothing gets done now that we have white people, things are getting done...our tax dollars mean nothing, they say change for the better has come to America, uhmm I wonder for who!
