Lalo Schifrin is an amazing composer. This song was sampled by Portishead and became one of their biggest hits.

They didn't rip it off, they *sampled* it. Lalo Schifrin was credited in the liner notes. Electronic music and hip hop frequently sample and loop music from other genres.

Such a great piece. LS is probably the best composer for Espionage and Suspense films. Ever.

If some people don't like sampling, if they think it's creatively bankrupt, that's fair enough. Lots of people think the same thing about trip hop, hip hop, dubstep, etc. But MORALLY wrong, as in theft? It is by definition not theft if the right to reproduce the piece has been sold. And more than that, who's to say the original creators aren't HAPPY to have their music used respectfully by other artists? I've never heard Lalo Schifrin complain. For all you guys know, he LOVES Sour Times.

I'm well versed in these symantics you speak of. Many many Musicians are held hostage these symantics as it's the new style no dispute there. but it's subjective according to what angle you approach it ala artistic merit or some pennies, if it's right or wrong, and aside from the meal ticket it's still a rip off tactic. why so emotional over the fact?

It's semantics. Whoever held the license to the music -- a record company, CBS, Shifrin himself -- gave Portishead their permission to use the piece. Portishead was upfront about who the original artist was. To say they "ripped it off" implies illegitimacy, and that's just not the case.
