WATCH THIS VIDEO OF THE SPCA'S MALL ADOPTION SITE SUPERVISOR, CHRISTINE V., EXPLAINING OUR SOPHISTICATED CAT HOUSING, THE FIRST LIKE IT IN ALL OF WESTERN NEW YORK!

With the help of generous donors, business leaders, and community members, the SPCA Serving Erie County will once again be able to find hundreds of homes for hundreds of felines as it reopens its adoption center at the Walden Galleria Mall in Cheektowaga, NY. The mall "post" is an initiative of the SPCA's new Cat Army, designed to honor and defend the lives of cats.

The adoption site opened this morning and will be in operation during all mall hours. Cats and kittens of all ages can be adopted from the center, located in the original 2008 SPCA adoption center at the mall: upper level, near Macy's. For the month of June, Adopt-A-Cat Month, cats and kittens 21 weeks and older can be adopted for $50 ($35 off the regular adoption fee). Kittens 20 weeks and younger can be adopted for $100. Adoption fees include spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations, feline leukemia/FIV tests, microchip ID, and more.

Thanks to the community coming together last year, the SPCA enjoyed a unique opportunityopening a full-time adoption center at the busy Walden Galleria Mall, says SPCA Executive Director Barbara Carr. "The site boasted adoption numbers beyond our expectations. Between August 21 and September 30, 383 cats and kittens were adopted from our highly-visible upper-level site. Even when we changed to a less-visible location and opened only three or four days each week for limited hours, another 166 animals were adopted through December 31.

The projected year-round center is expected to result in more than 2000 animal adoptions annually. Because more animals will be leaving the shelter environment, there will be fewer stress-related illnesses requiring expensive treatments, more available adoptions cages, and more room to accept and afford the admission of a greater number of surrendered animals into the shelter, including those in need of veterinary care.

Most importantly, with the help of this center, the SPCA Serving Erie County is coming closer to reaching its goal of euthanizing no adoptable cat in 2009, an important mission of the Cat Army.

"While our community has come farther than any other community in the nation in protecting and saving the lives of its cats, we still live in a community in which the shooting of six-week-old kittens, as in last summers Lackawanna Animal Control Officer cruelty case, is considered by some to be justifiable," says Carr. "We live in a community in which it is still not uncommon to hear people say that they hate cats. We still live in a community in which thousands of cats live on the streets, scrounging for food, having litters of kittens in woodpiles and sheds. We still live in a community in which cats continue to be misunderstood and maligned.

"Those of us for whom this is a concern need a way to have our voices hearda forum in which we can help cats to be understood and respected for the wonderful creatures that they are," adds Carr. "By banding together and using our resources wisely, the Cat Army will allow the SPCA to develop educational and marketing programs to educate those who misunderstand cats, to dispel the many myths surrounding cats, and to find a loving home for every adoptable cat."
