Religious observances are held in temples throughout the country to mark the important events that took place on the Il Full Moon Poya Day.It is on such a day that the Buddha delivered his first sermon to the five hermits at the Isipathanarama in Banares. It is also on an Il Full Moon Poya day that the Buddha sent his disciples to spread the doctrine of the Buddha thus starting the missionary activities. The Buddha left for Uruwela where 500 followers of Jatila brothers led by Uruwel Kashyapa entered the order. It is also on an Il Full Moon Poya Day that the announcement of the future Buddhahood of Maitriya Bodhisatva was made. It is also the last Poya Day of the rainy retreat season. The Poya Day Dhamma sermon at the Temple Trees was delivered by the Chief Incumbent of the London Buddhist Vihare Ven. Kabalawe Sirisumana Thera. A large number of people including Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa participated in the occasion.

The "Savanak Ras" programme of the ITN was recorded and telecast from the Jetawanarama premises in Sravasti, India. The programme consisted of Sheela and meditation campaigns as well as dhamma sermons. The 'Katina Cheevara pooja' of the historic Ruvanweli saya was also held today.

Meanwhile the Katina pooja ceremony at the Naga Vihare in Jaffna was held with the participation of a large number of people. The programmes were conducted under the guidance of Ven. Meegahajandure Dhammarakkhitha Thera. A Pirith chanting Ceremony was also held last night. Tamil people in the north as well as devotees from the south participated in the programme.
