The song's about a friend of Jim's who got knifed in Glasgow when they were kids. They were bailed up one day and his mate got a flick-knife in the guts and died right there. That's all. It's very literal, as Jim was back then. He wasn't big on alegorical statements back in 1983. Still one hell of a rock song. Thanks for the upload.

Some comments are funny, who cares really. Music defines certain periods in our life and brings those memories back of some great and some not so great. Just enjoy it for that is what music is all about.

@adflwf look i try not to bring the topic of war into the comments bar because it is a topic i much rather not talk about. it is a great sports song and a few people have said it is a great song for life in general. but you also don't know my opinion on soldiers that give their lie for our nation and for freedom. so i will tell you it is really rather simple i hold them in the highest regard so maybe you shouldn't judge a persons veiw on a song before you comment yourself

@ipsilon160 people like you piss me off, all over the news "our heroes go to do battle with the west coast eagles", well news to you mate, people like my two cousins in the army, litterally do go out and do battle in afghanistan! and sadly two of my family left last year for afghanistan, and only one returned.
Mr. J Barnes in his finest Hour !!! Aussie Rock icon and still with more petrol in the tank. Brilliant Live . Song about Mateship and chopping out a mate in hard times." In forpenny, in for a pound". Thanks for the song.

@ipsilon160
May I say, respectfully, I disagree.
Yes, Barnes is Scottish-born Australian. Yes, he is one of the biggest Australian rock icons. Yes, sport is the central, male, Australian past-time. To limit this song to sports though is like taking 0.0001% of its meaning. It is centrally a song about a man having a woman snuff the life out of him. It is about survival. Sure, sports. What about #1: women? Work? Family? Raising children? Letting parents go? And helping out as VALNUT1 says.
