There is also a new face detection in Canon EOS 450-D feature that brightens faces in backlit scenes — ideal for obtaining crisp, nicely exposed portraits and group photos when shooting into the sun. Auto Lighting Optimizer can be turned off when not needed in Creative Zone mode.

After all I've done a few test and the best is to keep it at it's default of Medium "Standard". Off will make it too dark and high too bright. There's quite a big difference between low-med but I still think medium is somewhat better so stick to default.

The most important feature is actualy (Highlight Tone Priority) which for some stupid reason is disabled by default on the 500D/T1i.
