Yeah this is real. This video became so famous that Blizzard (maker of the game) offered him a job which he declined. In edition to that there is now a title you can get in the game for killing these birds, named after leeroy.

As for dieing, when you die you keep all items and become a ghost. Your armor takes damage that cost money to repair and you have to run all the way back to your corpse from the nearest grave yard. Needless to say dieing sucks.
