Written by Eric Bogle , this song could be about any city , but as the 'Ramblers had a hit with it and made it famous I always assumed it was about Dublin Ireland.
Although the images are a bit depressing ,they do reflect what Dublin slums were like until the 1980s , please rate the video , LYRICS AND CHORDS

  • There were so many cold and hungry children in the slums of Dublin because

the Catholic Church wouldn't allow contraception.

  • Memories uncle Sly

  • This song makes me so sad , It makes me think of my fathers family and how poor they were.

  • Jees he sounds just like my uncle Paul...

  • love the song and the DCR thanks for the old photos. and posting

  • Have some Gur cake yu whore.

  • Great voice Patsy. Wish you still had...

  • I am from England but with Irish ancestry, but you can still buy blackjack chews, and they used to be 2 for a penny when I was little, and I am 59 now. It has been a long time since you commented, but this reminds me of my own childhood !

  • This is so sad and I bet it wil bring back memories for some who lived it. Very good words and tune, and very insightful, from a very talented writer.

  • couldn't agree more! In twenty years time Eric'll be "discovered". Mind you, living in Adelaide means you are keeping a low profile -lol!
