ANCHOR:
And in Pakistan, it's looks almost certain that Yousaf Raza Gilani will be signing on as the new prime minister. President Musharraf is likely to face further political isolation as a result of the appointment and may be forced out of his office.

STORY:
Signing his name on the line - Yousaf Raza Gilani throws his hat into the ring at a meeting of the Pakistan People's Party.

With the PPP nomination, he's all but certain to be Pakistan's next prime minister.

The PPP won the largest number of seats in Pakistan's election last month - and now has the backing of a regional pro-Musharraf party in the National Assembly.

But the unseen heroine - or perhaps martyr - of the elections was undoubtedly former PM Benazir Bhutto, who was assassinated in December.

[Yousaf Raza Gilani, Prime Minister Nominee for the PPP]:
"Whatever signs of democracy you can see in the country today, no matter how small, they are because of the martyrdom of the respected Benazir Bhutto."

Gilani is expected to be voted into office by the assembly on Monday, and sworn in by President Musharraf on Tuesday.

Musharraf now faces political isolation in power - and despite his promise to honor the elected government, there is intense speculation that he may be forced out of office.

  • You said its a sad day for Mush. But what will be the result? As you are seeing that after 5 months has gone these politicians are making fool to pakistani people. What should be solution all of this situation?

  • It's not a sad day for Pakistanis. It is a great day for them. But yes, it a sad sad sad day for Musharraf and his handful of fans too blinded by tears, watching their uncontested hold over the country, its people and its resources slipping away. I would say I feel sorry for them but then I'd be lying.

  • sad sad sad sad for our pakistan
