This is true. In WW1 Italy was never on the side of Germany/Austria. Read the lyrics to their anthem and it talks about defeating the Austrian eagle. It was offered or agreed by Britain that Italy would receive territory for their efforts in WW1 but this offer was betrayed which is partly why Mussolini didnt trust Brits/France etc and sided with Hitler.
