When preparing to start a fire the first thing I do is gather my components. I need tinder, small twigs for kindling and finger size sticks for starter fuel. This is also the time I gather a few large pieces for the night. Different situations require different solutions, so base the amount you gather on urgency of need. (but you will need tinder, kindling and starter twigs) Here I gathered some bark to use as a barrier between tinder and ground. Using some Birch bark as my tinder(worked it until I created a bird nest looking pile. Using some of Last years wild grape vine for kindling, stuff hanging along side creek near campsite( broke it into 3" to 4" pieces. Dead twigs also lying along side creek. Didn't destroy any living thing to make this fire. Campsite was Chubbehatchee Creek, Elmore County in Alabama.

  • Fat pine shavings, birch bark and cattail fluff, old mans beard..these are the things I look for everytime I am in the woods. Don't always collect and use, but the practice of looking for creates a familiarity with the process.
