3)Why are people intimidated to join and stay in KP?
a.Angie: Because KP is such a huge organization, people are intimidated; people gravitate towards others ad create cliques which I realize is a natural part of life. Dont see a concerted effort to break down those cliques, see a lot of exclusivity and hidden unspoken personal agendas that foster in cliques, thats one reason why people are uncomfortable. Another reason is because people have different needs. For example, Kamalayan and Kaba were organization that were in KP and broke off because they felt like their needs were not being addressed, so were just really big because were focusing on one thing and not the needs of other, people interested in political things or processing things, they wont stay if thats not being addressed and with cliques, exclusion is being fostered.
b.Camille: Agree with Angie, I was intimidated to join KP because this is a loud cliquey org, where am I going to find myself in this org, maybe I dont want to do PCC or do those things, thats what we have to address. so if its loud and cliquey people, that might not be addressed easily but maybe we can redirect people with certain needs, KP goes on the foundation of SPACE, and its really hard but we focus on keeping that balance, but all those things intersect so with one comes another, so if we just make sure that were doing the best we can to create this space, then people wont be intimidated to join, if we have more people in the space that arent scared to outreach, people wouldnt be intimidated to join and stay.
c.Angie: Not going to lie, I was/am still intimidated but thats why Im running for chair because I know that Im not the only one who feels that way, know people who feel disenchanted with the org. Personall as a chair, I would emphasize that its not about KP but its about community. What Moe said during the first chair Q&A as a board about community is beautiful, I would entertain the idea of class reps to maintain the effort to reach out to the different classes, people would stay in KP if they were invested in something, gauge that by getting to know people through surveys, 1-on-1s so its just not all in my head or what board wants to say
d.Camille: Personally, I was anti-KP and intimidated by the space at first but a big reason why I stayed in the space is because I had a buddy system. I had Prince and Jessica and we had a buddy system. I dont want to necessarily implement a buddy system but if you have at least one friend in the space, it wont be intimidating. Because chair doesnt have a big event to plan, like what I said before, I want to be the person to check-in with people that are not just on board but planners and just people. If people are having a hard time in the space, I want to be there to talk about it and see what fix it/what can I do for you? I want to be the support system, be someone you can always talk, each person in this community has potential to go very far and its just maybe that one person to see how far that potential can go.
