This clip picks up after two brief headlines that take a minute each Channel One's Shelby Holliday gives a "teaser" for a NASCAR story after the commercial break.
Ms. Holliday knows there is no need for a "teaser" since schools are contractually required to show the controversial Channel One News program to the captive audience of students. Students have no choice. Channel One is called Channel One because it's a play on "One Channel." That's why advertisers like it so much - no student can change the channel. They have to watch Ms. Holliday no matter how good or bad she is and the commercials have no competition.
First there is an inappropriate plug for the age-inappropriate TV show "Pretty Little LIars" (another Alloy product), BTW this violates Channel One's own published news standards but these type of celebrity plugs dominate this classroom TV show.
Then Joe Bonamassa again prostitutes himself to promote various artists on record labels that are paid advertisers on C1.
Then there is a military recruitment ad. These recruitment commercials are powerful films that seen over and over again can have a great impact on the thinking of young people especially because Channel One News is found disproportionately in schools in lower-income communities.
Channel One News is rarely seen in suburban schools with large amounts of resources.
The irony is that Channel One robs students of up to seven weeks of instructional school time if the program is shown according the the contract. That means that the mere act of watching this commercial TV show for one hour a week for seven years will keep many students from graduating and therefore they may begin thinking of the military as an alternative to college.
The teen NASCAR driver story is a waste of school time. There is no hard news in this story. There is no information that will help students on their achievement tests. This is just a human interest story that is filler for this faux news show. We only show the first part of this NASCAR teen story but it lasts 3 minutes and 28 seconds. It is the longest feature on this May 12, 2010 program.
Parents and other taxpayers have little to no idea taxpayer-funded school time is being wasted in this manner.

Joining the military was probably the single best thing I've ever done. If I had to live my life over again, I'd join again.

Channel One is simply forced corporate/government propaganda. I know because I have to watch this crap every school day in high school!

@lakebay972 My school was very conservative, but they seemed to think it was valuable to the students. And it was. It helped us form our own opinions on issues rather than just having our parents beliefs shoved down our throats. It started getting bad around my junior year. Then it was just a chance to do homework.

@momogal04 I watched it back in 1992; and to me, it seemed like propaganda. It was either something to do with then-President Bush41 or USA vs Japan as it emphasized how Japanese students were all about studying and looking beyond college while US students were just lazy party animals.

I'm 18, and I remember this stupid show. I didn't really mind the recruitment ads, but I think the rest of it was a waste of time. My school was in a relatively good area (not rich or poor, upper middle class type) so I don't know why it was shown in our area. I didn't like the fact that it had an obvious political agenda, which baffled me because they talked about (subtext) about War being bad, yet they still ran recruitment ads. I think they should be taken off the air.
