In the presence of death itself, the Fugs sing a church friendly version of the Tuli Kupferberg classic from their first album in 1966. Omitted are Tuli's favorite lines, "Carpe Penam " and "Carpe Culam." Tuli said at that time he was a young man and death was only an abstract idea to him. As he grew older, the song became more ominous. He would call himself "Tuli Coocoobird" sometimes, so "sing, coocoo, sing." His photo looks on, his remains are in the casket before the stage. The surviving Fugs are Steve Taylor, Scott Petitto, Coby Batty, and leader Ed Sanders. St. Marks Church in the Bouwerie, July 17, 2010.

  • A lovely hymn like rendition of Tuli and Ed's song.I shed a tear at the end too.I love The Fugs.

  • I knew it all along! Tuli Kupferberg is responsible for all those priests molesting kids. The bishops just put out a report implicating the hippies for causing the breakdown in moral life that led those men astray!

  • you can't out swing the angel of death!

  • I am so moved by this, imagine having to play that song over and again, what a forced meditation on your on mortality, and to be in that space between the death of a loved one, and your own death... so intense. I can't believe people clapped at the end though... how could you not be silenced by something like this.

  • Yes, I've been a Fugs fan for years, but this is a very moving performance. I think Ed was struggling a bit, however, you can't blame him.

  • Beautiful.

  • tragic but so awesome...tuli will be missed...thank you for this...

  • very, very moving!

  • I wish i could have been there. I love Tuli and will miss him so much. Despite the huge empty space he left behind we have him in our hearts and so much wonderful work that will live as long as people enjoy/fight for free speech.

  • fucking beautiful!!!!!!!!!! you nailed it!!!!! god bless tuli kupferberg!~~~~~~~~~~~ and thank you for such beautiful singing!
