On July 11, 2007, former U.S. Ambassador Joe Wilson testified before the House Judiciary Committee. The hearing dealt with, inter alia, the recent commutation by President George W. Bush of the 30 month federal prison sentence of the convicted felon, Lewis "Scooter" Libby, an ex-top aide to V.P. Dick Cheney. Ambassador Wilson said: The Libby case was all about a "betrayal of our national security." It was also "a vicious means of political retribution." He charged that the scheme, which included leaking his wife's name, who was a covert CIA agent, was "initiated by V.P. Dick Cheney, who 'directed' his chief-of staff, [Lewis 'Scooter] Libby to supervise it." Ambassador Wilson continued: The matter was about, too, the Bush-Cheney Gang's "case for war and its willingness to 'mislead' the American people...The obstruction of justice is ongoing and now the President has emerged as its greatest protector."
