@artkid666 I've read the book, but I've also studied Lucknow and Awadh's high culture through other books, memoirs, research papers and people who have lived that era. This is a crude depiction, whether it's the jewelry or the dress she's wearing. This is closer to the Punjabi style rather than Awadhi style. Also, this is not a war of nationalism and India vs Pk and so on. This is just a debate on an aspect of historical art. And I don't know why you brought in the bit about kotha and mehfils.

I think Rani was more true to the novel. Umrao Jaan ada was never supposed to be gorgeous which is why the then beauty queens Zeba or Babra sharif were not picked for the role. Zeba would have been stunning as a courtesan but Rani is more true to the novel because Umrao was better known for her "Adaas" and her "Raks" (dance) but mostly for her poetry! Rani is the incomparable Umrao and this movie was just simply amazing!

@gunahgaar86 Um then what else is supposed to depict the time of Umrao Jaan Ada? The jewelry is perfect and if you have ACTUALLY read the novel of Umrao Jaan Ada she used to go to private "Mehfils" and the set PERFECTLY depicts it. She did not dance at the "Kotha"!!!! Atleast gather the knowledge about the novel first!
