Well, here we are again. Another week, another do-or-die showdown between Clinton and Obama. This time, in Indiana and North Carolina. Despite political coverage that sometimes resembles Us Weekly more than Time. Serious issues are at stake. And all too often, the candidates get away with offering sound bites rather than solutions.
Take trade for example. You wouldn't know it from listening to the Democratic candidates. But most economists say NAFTA has been a net plus for the America economy. A Washington Post analysis found that new technologies and arising Chinese manufacturing sector are far more responsible for lost jobs than NAFTA. It's not perfect, but NAFTA has helped expand exports of American goods into Canadian and Mexican markets.
As journalists and as voters, we should demand more hard truth and less pandering from the campaigns and hold politicians accountable for unfairly making NAFTA a four letter word.
pander:to give someone anything they want in order to please them, even if it seems unreasonable or unnecessary - used to show disapproval
