@vansrok1 what he meant was... you can play anything on anything. Open-backs are cheaper. You can play picking on open-backs, but for bluegrass, you should get a resonator... but not a cheap one. that's why i prefer open backs.
i never said i needed anything, so the emphasis on need is unnecessary. what i asked was if a banjo with a resonator was appropriate for bluegrass/traditional folk music.
ive been looking to buy a banjo and i am clueless on what to get. my brother has just a cheap banjo that has an open back, ive heard that if you want to play fingerpicking bluegrass/folk music, then you should get a banjo with a resonator, is this true?
My first banjo was a Goodtime Special. I wish I would have bought the Goodtime II instead because the extra expense of getting the tone ring really isn't worth the extra cash. However, they are great starter and old time banjos.

You don't NEED any certain type, its all what you want to hear with your play style. Personal preference.
