The tide of rebellion swept across the nation, and in July 1789, a mob of insurgents stormed the Bastille prison, killing the local leaders.

Violence and bloodshed continued for several years, and in 1793, the National Convention convicted King Louis and Marie Antoinette to death by guillotine. Their deaths, however, did not end the violence. The people of France continued to pay the price of democracy in blood into the next decade.

...These are their stories.
