Stephen Brown, Company Manager of New Yorks Metropolitan Opera gives a master class in opera and singing to a group of students at Loyola University, New Orleans. After giving some insights into the challenges of teaching and judging students of voice, he assesses the work of four students and gives feedback on their performances. Among the topics he addresses are: stagecraft and acting, breath control, focus and projection, and the importance of context to a successful performance.

  • Ummm. stick to being a manager, not a vocal teacher.

  • I agree...it was "voix mixte" and not falsetto!

  • He is referring to the "noble" posture in regards to the posture of the third singer.

  • As Stephen points out, one of the most difficult things is not opening sounds and forcing near the passaggio. Ramey was amazing in this respect. He could sing a high tessitura and keep the voice always supported and focused and never forced.
