Ha, Irene's annoyed look when Soames is trying to talk to her while she's playing piano. If that was me, I'd have reflexively hit someone, but then again, I'm speaking as a pianist. I hate it when people bother me as I'm playing, and I relate to Irene in the fact that being forced into a loveless marriage, music was a consolation to her and even then she was forced to be brought back into reality.

Irene is a cold fish, she does not try to converse while playing the piano, and when they go upstairs for sex, she actually looks sour and dutiful instead of smiling and holding his hand.

i thought this version would be great because the first was really good and im sorry this is like watching two old people screw, or watching paint dry. . . .how slooooow and boring! I love Damien Lewis though

Irene's class placed her in a realaly awful position. There was very little work a woman in her position could have done. She could have become a governess and that's about it. And as a governess she'd have earned very little to live a life of seclusion. like being buried alive. Given her general lack of options I think it's easy to understand why she chose to marry a man she didn't love. And she was honest about her lack of feelings for him anyway.

These two people are just gross- Soames and Irenee. I have no sympathy for either of them. The only person out of this whole series who got a raw deal is June.

@BloodyLisBeth I dont think its even ever made clear in the book as to why Irene married Soames when she didnt love him . Because of that in the original series a side story was written that Irenes widowed step mother with whom she still lived had gotten involved with a horrid old bugger who all but attacked her and so Soames was the only way out of the situation .

Soames should have inquired what she was doing in the bathroom after their intimate moments over the years. Actually, that was not a good birth control method she used. Although, it was assumed at one time that couples did not have any children until after the first two years of marriage. At least, I think that is proper.
