  • Is it possible to use the AIM-120 and AIM-9 in a "passiv mode"? I can remember a passiv mode in LockOn with the F-15C, where you are able to turn off the radar and use HeatSeeker / RadarSeeker of the AIM-9/AIM-120. Specially the passiv AIM-9 is verry interessting, because it is a "stealth attack" without launch or tracking warnings for the enemy? Is this also possible in Falcon BMS?

  • @n00p3 You CAN fire it without a radar lock, this is a known as a "mad dog" launch - but it's nowhere near as effective, and it may lock onto a target you don't expect, such as friendlies.

  • @tanit ok didn't expect that. Thought the AIM-9 fired in passiv mode would be as effective as with radar, cause it is not guided with radar. And also the AIM-120 when target is in pitbull-range. So, thought wrong, thanks for your answer.

  • @n00p3 The radar gimbals the seeker head of the AIM9 toward the radar contact, otherwise the seeker head is just centered in the HUD (the diamond). So if you were to launch, it would only be effective without lock if it was relatively centered in the HUD and you heard a tone. I mean there's always a chance it will acquire after launch if you just pickle it off, but for best results make sure the radar is locked onto it.

  • I never manage to easily lock on to the enemy with my radar, neither do I manage to keep that lock for very long, but at least when I do I get the kill...

I find it tedious to lock on to the enemy using the keyboard arrows, so I tend to go over to dogfight override mode. Thing is I like to know what im doing, dogfight mode is like auto-lock mode without me knowing what im doing, or what the plane is doing. Tips?

  • @Shurryy Keep in mind if you hold down TMS up it will focus the radar beam on a narrow area of the sky which can allow you to acquire and lock onto a target quicker. Also consider the geometry of the nose while using the radar. If you are at high alt, and nose level, it will be difficult to lock onto a radar contact which is low - you need to aim your nose at the target. It's a search light, not a solid wall that comes out from the nose.

  • This might be a stupid question but, how do you get out of dogfight mode?

  • @tanit

I see, that makes sense. Thanks for the reply. :)

  • @sergiobfb Falcon 4 AF has primitive graphics compared to BMS and reduced realism. BMS is almost at the point of being a military simulator, and in some regards is probably more sophisticated than the military simulator for the f-16. I would recommend downloading Falcon 4 - it is no longer sold and the companies which produced it are defunct, it's essentially abandonware. I have a number of allied force videos on my channel if you want to see it in action.

  • Hello Tanit.

Since i saw your tutorial videos, i went to dust off my sidewinder forcefeedback and unearth my original falco4 CD. Unfortunatelly i couldn't find it. Is the Falcon4.0 Allied Force worst then Falcon4 with BMS? whats the main diference between them? Will i be satisfied with the Allied Force version ? pls send some feedback
