Theatrical trailer for the 1951 Rex Allen western, UTAH WAGON TRAIN. Television had such a devastating impact on exhbitors and producers of such Saturday matinee staples as B-westerns and serials, that both genres would see their last releases by 1955. Former National Barn Dance singing star Rex Allen started later than either Gene Autry or Roy Rogers, but developed a substantial following thanks, in large part, to "The Arizona Cowboy's" magnificent voice and the quality of his 16 Republic films. Hedging their bet against Rogers' impending exit from the studio, Republic Pictures built Allen into a formidable western star with solid budgets, strong supporting casts and solid scripting. After the "King of the Cowboys" left the studio, Allen inherited the Rogers' production unit and ace action director, William Witney. The resulting films were among the very best B-westerns of the decade. By 1953, however, budgetary constraints were well in evidence with Rex often costumed to match spectacular stock footage from earlier Rogers films and the deletion of the songs from his last four entries to save the cost of royalties and recording time.
