@dne743 Wrong Again! The Idea of "1963 to stop JFK's assassination" was for Star Trek II and when Paramount rejected it they also hired Harve Bennett to replace Gene. Reread your BOOK! Also IT was Harve Bennett who insisted on keeping Gene on as consultant of the movies. Considering that we are the same age I can't see how you can be so terribly WRONG! Maybe you were not a fan of Trek while growing up. Also, as I said before I listen to Shatner, not his daughter.

@dne743 PS Religion is all through Star Trek, some religious episodes like "Bread and Circuses" were written by Gene himself! Religion in Trek..."Dagger of the mind" (Kirk dates Noel at a Chistmas party), Bread and Circuses", "The Galileo Seven" (Spock reconises that humans believe in Angels) , Where no Man Has Gone Before", "The Motion Picture", "Generations", and more!

@dne743 Wrong again! I go with what Shatner says. Shatner, unlike Nemoy, has never changed his stories of his days in Star Trek. He said that when he presented it to Gene, Gene said that it was a great idea on how to end the series. Originally STV was going to be the last movie. Gene had a special kind of contract as consultant. In the contract it said "no script can be made into a feature film without the show's creator's approval". Shatner & Gene have mentioned this many times.

@Trekfreek ok i havent heard that it just says William Shatner asked Paramount for money to complete the film the way he originally intended, for release on DVD. Paramount refused. on IMDB.com

@dne743 People don't pay attention to movies. They latch onto one thing and BANG that's the movie! It was not God, it was an alien trapped there by other aliens. But it is made clear at the end of the movie that God does exist when Kirk says "Maybe he is not out their Bones but right here...The human heart." This statement is very Jewish and Christian. Originally Shatner (who also wrote the story) wanted the crew to meet the real God & Roddenberry liked the idea. But the producers rejected it.

@s1977spw2 Not quite right. Shatner considered remaking the film but felt that everyone looked to old. Plus he would not do it without Kelly (he passed away before Shatner had the idea.) It's on the Directors edition DVD commentary track.

damn fine job buddy

Newsflash to people who don't get it, the entity that they encountered was not God. It was something akin to the Organians and other non-corporeal life forms that had been encountered before. It probably liked to think it was God which is probably why it got imprisoned at the center of the Galaxy in the first place.
I Dont think The final frontier is so bad. Its a shame that this movie had the smalles budget of all star trek movies and that they didint get ILM to do the effects. The movie could have been something great. 5/5

I intitially dissliked "The Final Frontier" in 1989, Yet, now that Deforest Kelly and James Dohan have passed, it has kind of grown on me, In this movie they kind of let there hair down a little, the querky off color remarks on board the Enterprise between the crew. They also ressurected the old sound effects from both the Original Series and the first Motion Picture for the bridge of the newly named Enterprise A, still a keeper.
