I read the Hound when I was 7-9 years old. I was so engrossed with the story, I remember it clearly.
I was thinking:"Man, that dog must come straight from the depths of hell!!!"

I must admit a cigar looks better in some ways as it would be more gentle on his mouth then a hard pipe stem.

In the books he smokes a mixture of cigarettes and pipes, and never uses a calabash - that was an addition by actors because it's a design that allows them to do other things at the same time.
