of course the catholic church had to ad the St.Nikolaus too - because they were not that successful in forbidding this rite. (for exact information contact a library)
After all - the Krampusse are coming each year on the 5th and 6th of december - and people from Gastein mostly are very proud of this tradition too! btw. the group you can see is one of the eldest groups who did Krampuslauf in Bad Gastein, they call themselves "Kötschachdorfer Pass"! We hope you enjoyed your stay!

This tradition is not about attacking people! It has its beginnings in the celtic rites for the dark winter nights: In order to give themselves hope, they started to defend themselves against the darkness and the bitterness of the winter! With loud noises and branches of trees, they intended to scare the "evil spirits" away and "clean" the houses spiritually.
In fact - Gastein is one of very little places in Europe that kept this tradition through the years...
