A short British Pathe film showing Muriel Orr-Ewing, headmistress at the Grove Finishing School in Sevenoaks, England, performing the Japanese Tea Ceremony, Chanoyu. Mrs. Orr-Ewing (nicknamed Meiko) was one of the first Westerners to receive a certificate in Chanoyu in 1929.
The University at Buffalo, The State University of New York University Archives has a large collection of Mrs. Orr-Ewing Papers. See the exhibit, "Thoroughly Modern Meiko: the adventures of Muriel Orr-Ewing": http://ublib.buffalo.edu/libraries/units/archives/exhibits/meiko/index.html
Delightful film of my grandmother Meiko performing Japanese Tea Ceremony. She was very proud to have been the first British woman to have been taught the ritual while she was living in Kyoto during the early and middle 1920's. Always gracious, always ahead of her time. May her memory be eternal.

Thank you for posting this. Meiko was my great grandmother and was quite senile by the time I was old enough to interact with her, so I don't have a lot of memories of her. This really made my day.
